It’s a cocktail, the drink is so popular in the UK it is often thought of as the number two English drink, tea of course being the first
Pimm’s No. 1 Cup was created in 1840 by a bartender named James Pimm at an oyster bar in London’s financial district. He blended gin with quinine and various herbs, and the drink was initially served as a digestive tonic in a tankard. The company claims that the original recipe of the liqueur is a trade secret known to only six people. 
In 1859, he began selling Pimm’s No. 1 commercially and the drink became a must-have concoction among the fashionable socialites of England. After the WWII, Pimm’s brand added No.2 (Scotch-based), No.3 (brandy-based), No. 4 (rum-based), No.5 (rye-based) and No.6 (vodka-based). Although it is hard to find these Pimm’s today as only No. 1 and No. 6 are produced today.
Originally produced in the city of London, todday the production has moved to Sottish Cameronbridge Distillery in Windygates in Fife. Although the cocktail is still seen as an English summer afternoon drink. It has also become the drink of Wimbledon, gaining the similar reputation of what Mint Julep is to the Kentucky Derby.

The Urban Variety family and friends spent Saturday afternoon at the track! The weather was great, our private patio was excellent and some of us even managed to win some money on the horses. The staff at Hastings Park were great, they gave us some betting instructions and taught us how it all works, but unfortunately some of us didn’t catch on very well. There were some who were a little too conservative with their betting, only winning $0.30 on one race, and there were others who turned out to be naturals. One lucky lady won $180 on a $5 bet, and ended up leaving with $300 at the end of the day! But all that aside, we had lots of fun and nobody lost too much money. While at Hastings Park, we learned that there will be a weekend of weiner dog racing coming up in a couple of weeks, so don’t be surprised to see some of the Urban Variety crew heading back there sooner rather than later.
Urban Variety members and friends decided to give up sleeping in one Sunday morning to go and participate in the Annual Rotary Seawalk Run. It was a flat 10k run that started out in Park Royal Village and took the scenic route out along the West Vancouver Seawall. Not only did it turn out to be lots of fun, we also managed to raise some money for charity. The great thing about this run is that teams can raise pledges that all end up going to the charity or organization of their choice, and the entrance fees go to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. We chose to donate our pledges to Variety, so we could help make life a little better for BC’s special needs kids. Our pledges totalled $240, and we’re looking forward to bringing out more of our members next year to raise even more for a great cause.

On Saturday, June 26, Urban Variety is hosting a day of festivities at Hastings Racecourse. Tickets will include a private patio with panoramic views, food, coffee and tea, betting instructions, and a day of fun and excitement! Drinks at a cash bar will also be available.
